Palestinian Muslim leaders on Saturday held Israel totally responsible for the dilapidation of Jerusalem's historical walls, and appealed to the Organization of the Islamic Conference (IOC) and its Jerusalem Committee as well as to the UNESCO to immediately intervene to protect the city’s Islamic and human heritage, at a time the Israeli expansion of the colonial settlements in the Holy City continues unabated.

Mufti of Al-Qods Sheikh Ikrama Sabri, the Palestinian Minister of Waqf and Religious Affairs Sheikh Yousef Salama and the Chief Judge Tayseer Al Tamimi were responding to an Israeli reports that large sections of the 16th century walls surrounding Jerusalem's Old City are in danger of collapse unless they undergo immediate restoration.

“The examination shows that the signs of cracking and crumbling, which are evidence of structural problems, have increased and become more widespread,” the Israeli daily newspaper Maariv reported on Friday.

“New cracks were also revealed in the southern wall [of Islam’s third holiest site of the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound], which shows evidence of movement in the entire wall,” the report added.

Another 29 sections of the wall, extending a total of 1,280 meters, are also in danger of collapse, but the threat is not quite so imminent, the report said.

Maariv was quoting an engineering survey conducted by the Israeli Antiquities Authority, which summed up by saying that 380 meters, or one-tenth, of the walls' extension are in immediate danger of collapse.

The survey showed 11 sections of the wall needing attention, most of them located along the northern and the southern stretches of the wall.

Built by Suleiman the Magnificent between 1536-1541, the Old City walls stretch a total length of 3.8 kilometres (2.3 miles).

Seven gates in the wall lead into the Old City. An eighth, the Golden Gate, is sealed off by the Israeli Occupation Forces (IOF).

UNESCO, OIC Urged for Immediate Intervention

“We hold the Israeli occupation authorities totally responsible for the dilapidation of Jerusalem's walls,” Sheikh Sabri said, adding that: “Large visible cracks have formed in the walls due to ongoing Israeli excavation work since 1967,” he told Al-jazeera.net.

Noting that “The (Islamic) Waqf has renovated some of the walls surrounding Al-Aqsa Mosque over the past few months,” Sabri said the Waqf is willing to maintain the walls if Israel doesn’t obstruct its work.

“The Waqf is willing and ready to continue the renovations if the Israeli authorities do not obstruct its work, as the materials needed for renovations have to pass through the outer gates of Al-Aqsa Mosque,” he said.

Similarly holding Israel responsible, the Palestinian Minister of Waqf Sheikh Salama blamed the Israeli occupation authorities for conducting suspicious excavation under the city of Jerusalem in general and Al Aqsa Mosque in particular, which caused the cracks in the walls of the old city.

Maintenance of the historical buildings of Jerusalem is the responsibility of the Palestinian National Authority (PNA) and the Israelis have nothing to do with the repairs, Salama said in a statement.

Israel was preventing the reconstruction materials from entering the Al Aqsa Mosque, he announced.

Also holding the Israeli government responsible for the cracks of wall, Chief Islamic Judge Al Tamimi in a separate statement said that the Israeli excavations might lead to the collapse of the wall and other historical ruins in Jerusalem.

Israel Squeezing Palestinians out of Jerusalem

Israel's stubbornness on the status of Jerusalem foiled the Middle East peace process, Palestinian Prime Minister Ahmad Qurei on Saturday told a seminar titled “Jerusalem is the key of peace and freedom” in the West Bank city of Ramallah.

The Israeli occupation measures aimed at squeezing Palestinians out of the Holy City are not confined to Muslims.

Israel, in a letter conveyed by the minister in charge of Jerusalem affairs Tzachi Hanegbi, warned the Greek Orthodox Patriarch-elect, Theophilos III, not to hold an official inauguration ceremony scheduled for November 22, Haaretz reported on Thursday.

The PNA and Jordan have already recognized Theophilos III, who was elected after his predecessor was ousted in a scandal of succumbing to Israeli pressure and yielding church property to the Israeli occupying power. But Israel has yet to recognize him.

Ongoing Israeli settlement expansion and the construction of the Israeli Apartheid Wall in Jerusalem have suffocated the city and squeezed out more than 50,000 Palestinian Jerusalemites.

Israeli “Defense” Minister Shaul Mofaz during a tour in Gush Atzion settlement bloc south of Jerusalem on Wednesday said that construction of Israel’s Apartheid Wall in the West Bank, Jerusalem inclusive, should be resumed, the Yedioth Ahronoth reported.

Mofaz also promised that the area between Ma'aleh Adumim and Jerusalem would be built up, and that the Israeli cabinet would make a decision to that effect before the elections, expected between next February-March.

On Thursday, the Israel Lands Administration (ILA) issued building tenders for 13 lots in the Israeli colonial settlement of Ma'aleh Adumim, while the Housing Ministry issued tenders for building infrastructures in the colonies of Ariel, Ma'aleh Adumim and Adam.

Israeli “Peace Now” issued a sharp protest against the construction and announced that the building was in violation of the UN-adopted roadmap peace plan, which was drafted by the Quartet of the United States, the United Nations, the European Union and Russia.

Some 14,500 children in Israeli-occupied east Jerusalem are not recognized by Israel’s educational authorities and it is not clear where - or even if - they are studying, the Ir Amim (City of the Nations) foundation reported last week.
