Palestinian People Mark Sixty Years of Nakba<BR><font class="ttext">Israeli Arab Palestinians Clash with Police in Safuriyah</font>

The Palestinian people in Israel, the Israeli-occupied Palestinian territories of the West Bank, Jerusalem inclusive, and Gaza Strip, the refugees in exile and the Diaspora these days mark the 60th anniversary of the their catastrophe “Nakba,” when Israel was created on their homeland, forcibly displaced less than one million people whose numbers account now to two thirds of Palestinians worldwide.

At 4:00 P.M. on May 14, 1948, "State of Israel" was proclaimed in Tel Aviv. About 8 hours later, the White House announced: "This government has been informed that a Jewish State has been proclaimed in Palestine, and recognition has been requested by the provisional government thereof. The U.S. recognizes the provisional government as the de facto authority of the new State of Israel." (De jure recognition came about in January 1949).

US President George W. Bush is expected in Israel on May 13 to celebrate Israel’s 60th anniversary.

The democratic House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is reportedly to join Bush. On April 22 she told the lower house of the Congress that “the creation of Israel stands out as one of the greatest
achievements of the 20th century.”

In the third excerpt from Benny Morris's new book on Israel's founding, the author recounts the historic 1947 UN vote that led to the British Mandate's partition.

On the afternoon of Nov. 29, 1947, the UN General Assembly presidium at last put draft Resolution 181 -- the Partition Plan for Palestine -- to the vote. The hall was packed. In alphabetical order, each country was asked "yes," "no" or "abstains." The procedure was broadcast live on radio around the world. When the tally was complete, 33 states had votes "yes," 13 "no," with 10 abstentions. Partition had narrowly passed with a two-thirds majority.

The "nays" consisted of the Arab and Muslim states, Greece, Cuba and India; the "ayes" of the United States, the Dominions (including Canada), Western Europe, the Soviet Bloc and most of Latin America. Among the abstainers had been Britain, Chile and China.

Resolution 181 called for the partition of Palestine into two sovereign states, a Jewish state with a Palestinian majority on about 55% of Palestine's territory and an Arab state on about 42% of Palestine. The British Mandate was to terminate and the British pullout to be completed "not later than 1 August 1948."

The Jerusalem area -- including the city itself, outlying villages and Bethlehem -- was designated a corpus separatum, to be governed by the UN Trusteeship Council. The borders were set out in ad-joining maps.

In an effort to bring about a peaceful end to the war in 1948, Count Folke Bernadotte was appointed by the UN as a mediator between the Arabs and Israel. He submitted his report to the UN Security Council on September 16, 1948 and was assassinated by the Zionists on the following day.

Bernadotte’s proposals to end the conflict were published on September 20 and made it clear that no settlement can be just and complete if recognition is not accorded to the Arab refugee to return to his home.

On December 11, 1948, the UN General Assembly adopted resolution no. 194, which established the Palestine Conciliation Commission (PCC) consisting of the representatives of the US, France, and Turkey to assume the functions given to the UN Mediator on Palestine. The resolution stipulated the return and compensation of Palestinian refugees.

On May 9 the Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza Strip launched a week-long events to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the Nakba (Catastrophe) and the Executive Committee of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) called on them to mark the occasion.

The Higher National Committee for Commemorating Nakba called on all Palestinians to participate in the demonstrations to protest “the celebrations of the occupation’s state (Israel) which was built on the ruins of our people, villages and cities” and called on them “to stick to their legitimate right of return.”

At a rally in Bethlehem, a giant key was driven through the streets to symbolize Palestinians' attachment to the properties they were driven out of in the wake of Israel's birth.

In Gaza ailing 87-year-old Abu Mohammed Abu Assi, a Palestinian refugee from al-Shatee (Beach) Refugee camp, has made his will, leaving his only property and a key of return to his grandsons.

"The key symbolizes the right of return for them and for all refugees worldwide," said frail Abu Assi, who is originally from Hamama, a village near Gaza and now inhabited by Israeli Jews.

"We should pass the torch from one generation to the next," Abu Assi said.

On Thursday, Israeli Arab Palestinians, including 10 parliament members, marched in Safuriyah for the right of return for refugees who fled their homes during the 1948 war that followed the creation of Israel as the Jewish state marked its 60th anniversary.

The march, attended by thousands of Arab Israelis from northern Israel, was marred later in the day when clashes broke out between some demonstrators and police and several people were injured, police and other officials said.

Associated Press television footage showed Israeli police firing tear gas at Palestinian protesters, who chanted "Palestine, Palestine!" Five police officers and six protesters were reported injured.

Chanting "no alternative to the right of return," thousands of people walked up a grassy hill toward a pine grove that covers the ruins of the Arab village of Safuriyah.

As they made their way up a dirt path alongside a highway, they waved Palestinian flags and the orange and red banners of Arab Israeli political parties, chanting: "With our blood, with our soul, we sacrifice for Palestine."

"The crusaders were here for 150 years and then they left. The same thing will happen with Israel," said Suleiman Abd al-Majid, 73, who was forced out of Safuriyah at the age of 14 and now lives in nearby Nazareth.

Palestinian refugees in the neighboring Arab countries and Palestinian Diaspora marked the Nakba with events worldwide including the United States, Canada, Europe and Australia.
