EU Slams Israeli House Demolitions in E. Jerusalem

The European Union (EU) is “deeply concerned” about the threat of demolition to approximately 90 houses in the Al-Bustan area adjacent to the Old City in East Jerusalem.

The EU noted in a statement released on Wednesday that the demolitions would make more than 1,000 Palestinians homeless, “and would be the largest destruction of Palestinian houses in East Jerusalem since 1967.”

“Demolition of houses in this sensitive area threatens the viability of a comprehensive, just and lasting settlement, in conformity with international law,”

The houses were built without construction permits which residents say are nearly impossible to obtain. Many of the houses were also built before Israel occupied East Jerusalem in 1967. The Israeli Jerusalem municipality has designated the area for a public park.

A confidential EU report slammed Israeli policies in East Jerusalem stressing that it hinders Palestinian existence in the occupied city.

The report, which was obtained by the Guardian British Newspaper, accuses Israel of illegally annexing East Jerusalem by expanding Jewish settlements, demolishing Palestinian homes and installing roadblocks.

The report also stated that the Israeli policies in East Jerusalem, including constructing new Jewish settlements, the Annexation Wall, demolishing homes ad discriminating against the Palestinians, hinders the Palestinian development and existence and solidifies the Israeli presence in East Jerusalem.

It also stated that the Israeli policies are harming the peace process and are questioning the Israeli commitment.

The EU report yet recognized “Israel's right” to perform activities for security purposes, but added that most of Israel's illegal activities in East Jerusalem do not have any security motivation.
Furthermore, the report slams the ongoing Israeli demolition of Palestinian homes in East Jerusalem and considers the issues as a violation to the International Law as, these policies have immediate and dangerous effects on the Palestinians.

It also states that although the Palestinians constitute 34% of the total population in Jerusalem, the municipality allocates only 5 – 10% of its balance to serve the Arab population.

This has direct negative effects on the infrastructure and basic services in the Arab part of the city.

Commenting on the issue of Israeli settlements in East Jerusalem, the report stated that Israel had significantly increased its settlement activities after the Annapolis Summit of 2007.

After the summit, Israel approved the construction of 3000 homes for settlers in East Jerusalem.
There are currently nearly 190.000 Jewish settlers living in East Jerusalem settlements in areas that are supposed to be part of the future Palestinian state.

Besides its policies of demolishing Palestinian homes in East Jerusalem, Israel is baring the Palestinians from building news homes or expanding the existing ones.
