Fayyad: Jews In Future Palestinian State To Enjoy Equal Rights

Jews remaining inside a future Palestinian state would be welcome and enjoy equal rights, Prime Minister Salam Fayyad insisted on Sunday during a speaking engagement in the United States.

"Jews to the extent they choose to stay and live in the state of Palestine will enjoy those rights," at least to the extent that Palestinian citizens of Israel enjoy, Fayyad said to enthusiastic applause, according to a US news paper.

The Colorado-based Aspen Daily News quoted the prime minister as adding that "in fact the kind of state that we want to have, that we aspire to have, is one that would definitely espouse high values of tolerance, co-existence, mutual respect and deference to all cultures, religions. No discrimination whatsoever, on any basis whatsoever."

Fayyad was responding to a question from the former head of the CIA, James Woolsey, at the Aspen Institute's Aspen Ideas Festival, who asked the prime minister why Jews interested in residing inside a future state of Palestine, which would hypothetically include Hebron, not be treated the same way as Palestinian citizens of Israel.

Fayyad reportedly responded, "I’m not going to disagree with you. And I’m not someone who will say that they would or should be treated differently" than Muslim and Christian citizens of Israel, who have for decades complained of state discrimination but nonetheless enjoy a somewhat equal status under the law and can vote and run in Israeli elections.
