Lieberman Attacks On Abbas Is An Attempt For Denying The Palestinian State

Both the president's office and Palestine Liberation Organization responded in force to attacks by Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman on Monday.

Chief PLO negotiator Dr. Saeb Erakat said the comments critical of President Mahmoud Abbas were an attempt to deflect attention from Israel’s refusal to implement its prior commitments and obligations.

"By criticizing the presidency of Mahmoud Abbas, Israel’s Foreign Minister is hoping to deflect attention away from Israel’s refusal to implement its obligations under the Road Map, including a comprehensive settlement freeze," Dr Erakat said in a statement.

"I doubt such diversion tactics will wash with the international community, and certainly do not deserve much attention from those of us who are committed to peace," the top PLO official added, noting that he stands ready to negotiate with an Israeli government committed to peace.

Meanwhile, Presidency Spokesman Nabil Abu Rudeina, said that the statements of the Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman in which he doubted the legitimacy of President Mahmoud Abbas is a grave indication reflecting the policy of the Israeli government in denying the Palestinian state.

Abbas spokesman added that Lieberman's remarks were an attempt to counter Israel's crisis with the United States by "manufacturing another crisis," according to WAFA, Palestine's official news agency.

Abu Rdeina called on Israel to choose either a just peace with the Palestinians or continue creating instability in the region, rather than attacking a political figure who has the backing of the US and EU.

Both officials were responding to the latest in a war of words with Lieberman, who just one day after Israel's prime minister invited Palestinians for peace talks said that Abbas "is not really legitimate," Israel Radio reported, in response to the president's suggestion to an Egyptian newspaper that Kadima's Tzipi Livni would make a better foreign minister.

The Israeli foreign Minister, Avigdor Lieberman, said on Monday that as the Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas legitimacy as the leader of the Palestinians waned, he has increased his demands and toughened his position towards Israel.

Lieberman made his statement during an interview with the Israeli radio on Monday while responding to comments made recently by President Abbas that he will never give up the right of return.

"When we signed agreements with the Palestinian Authority, we signed with the PA that represented all the Palestinians - today you have Fatah in Judea and Samaria [the West Bank], and Hamastan in Gaza", Lieberman was quoted as saying in the radio interview.

He added "Who does Abu Mazen represent exactly? In the best case scenario, half of his people."

The Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas was elected in 2004. He got 70% of the votes, he ran against four other candidates.

It is noteworthy that Lieberman rejected in his statements on Monday the call of the EU High Representative Javier Solana for recognizing the Palestinian state in case the Israeli and the Palestinian sides reached no agreement.
